Angklung

Purchased near
Bangkok, Thailand, 1963

From
Graciela's Notes
The angklung is a sliding
rattle. Two or more bamboo tubes hang loosely
within a frame and make a sound when shaken
sideways. An angklung plays notes of one pitch,
with each of the tubes tuned in octaves. My
angklung has three bamboo tubes so it plays in
tones in three octaves. In the popular angklung
ensembles found in Thailand and Indonesia you
often have three or more angklungs play melodies
together. And that it is quite exciting and
interesting. The frame is made of wood. I
purchased the angklung at a small village not far
from Bangkok where we had gone to spend the day
and watch folk dances. The angklung was one of the
folk instruments used during the folk dancing
presentation. I bought it in December 1963.
