Qaraqueb -
Morocco
Purchased in Agadir, Morocco, 1967

From
Graciela's Notes
This metal castanet-like
instrument is of Berber origin and is still used
today in Morocco. They are used in pairs – one in
each hand – and are very heavy. Each one is at least
one foot long. While watching them used by the
musicians accompanying the dancers, I only saw men
playing them. Think that is due to the fact that
they are difficult to play due to their heaviness.
They do make a loud noise. I bought them in Agadir –
a city along the coast of Morocco – from the man who
was playing them after the folk-dance performance
ended. The musician and I made a deal through our
guide. They certainly added weight to my suitcase.
However, it did help that we had our own car as Ann
Power and I had driven to Morocco from Madrid. Spent
our Christmas holiday in that country in 1967.
