Center for Mexican American Studies presents 'Si Se Puede – Vivir en Paz' on Wednesday
Author Jose-Antonio Orosco, a philosophy professor at Oregon State University, will discuss his book, César Chávez and the Common Sense of Nonviolence, on Wednesday, as part of a public program sponsored by OLLU’s Center for Mexican American Studies and Research.
The presentation, “Si se Puede – Vivir en Paz: César Chávez and the Common Sense of Nonviolence,” will examine Chavez' unique philosophy that was often overlooked by the philosophies of other leaders of his time, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi.
Join the event and learn more about the farm worker advocate whose birthday will be remembered on March 31. The citywide march in his honor, the 13th Annual San Antonio Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice, will be on March 28.

Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Abby Gray and the Center for Women in Church and Society and partnering with Institutional Advancement staff, OLLU has been treated to a rich observance of Women’s History Month featuring prominent speakers, panel discussions, healthy luncheons, our first Women’s Center 5K, and Lenten Series dinners. The observance provided a top-notch program to build and strengthen relationships with a broad range of important businesses including McCombs Automotive, H-E-B, Broadway Bank, Silver Eagle Distributors and Conceptual MindWorks as CEOs and top executives visit our campus.
I am looking forward to welcoming Marsha McCombs Shields who will be the featured speaker at 5:30 p.m. today in the Elliott House. She will talk on the challenges of following in the giant footsteps of her father in leading one of the largest automotive enterprises in America as well as serving as President of McCombs Foundation that supports 300 charitable organizations across San Antonio and South Texas. I hope that you will join me there for a full house welcoming of Marsha.
The Learning from Leaders Distinguished Lecture Series has resulted in 100 guest lectures from CEO’s and corporate executives, entrepreneurs, non-profit heads and elected officials over the past five years. This has been reinforced by the many faculty who have scheduled guest speakers. Inviting business and community leaders to speak on campus is a highly effective way to introduce them to OLLU and a useful step in cultivating and sustaining relationships that can culminate in internships, scholarships and other gifts.
Here’s What You Can Do: Interested in scheduling a business or civic leader to speak to one of your classes or a student organization? Contact Jim Eskin and the Institutional Advancement staff, and they will be glad to suggest and recruit a speaker who would be a good fit for your class or audience.

I’m pleased to report that J. Kim McNutt, dean of sponsored projects and extended learning at California State University-Maritime Academy in Vallejo, Calif., has accepted the position of assistant vice president for continued learning in the Academic Affairs Division. Prior to joining Cal Maritime, he served as director of the Center for Professional Development at the Fulton School of Engineering at Arizona State University; director of Graduate Distance Education at SMU; and manager of Distance Education / Communications at New Mexico State. Kim earned a Master of Arts from SMU and a Bachelor of Arts from New Mexico State University. His start date will be announced shortly.
In order to better serve our prospective and current students, I am today announcing the reorganization of several areas involving the Registrar’s Office and both Houston Weekend College and San Antonio Weekend College. By moving current employees to new reporting lines, we will better integrate support for all employees in accomplishing their goals.
Effective immediately, the Registrar’s Office, led by Norma Anderson, will move from the Enrollment Management Division to the Academic Affairs Division. Thus the Registrar will be better positioned to support the academic needs of students and to work collaboratively with deans and faculty to support degree programs.
Recruiting personnel and functions related to both Houston and San Antonio Weekend College will report to the Enrollment Management Division. Those reporting lines include, for San Antonio: Edward Lerma, admissions counselor, Roxanne Sanchez, admissions counselor, Charles Puente, admissions counselor, and an admission processor position, currently vacant; and for Houston: Susana Zambrano, admissions counselor, Irma Garcia, admissions counselor, Patsy Williams, admissions processor, and Thelma Martinez, financial aid counselor.
Administrative, student advising, and military relations functions related to both Houston and San Antonio Weekend College will report to the new assistant vice president of continued learning in the Academic Affairs Division, Kim McNutt. Those reporting lines include, for San Antonio: Esme Nandin, interim director, Olga Castro, administrative secretary, Robert Davis, admissions counselor, and Homer De La Garza, military relations; and for Houston: Janie Handler, director, Wantrice McClain, administrative assistant, Carol Muscente, admissions counselor, Deidre Hayes-Cootz, admissions counselor, and Cynthia Gonzalez, student accounts representative.
I want to thank each of these employees for the important work they do. Through this reorganization plan, I see improved support for staff in order to assist their efforts as we increase enrollment and better serve our continuing students. I also would like to note that Dean Bob Bisking of our School of Business and Leadership has worked tirelessly during this time in an interim role leading both Weekend College areas and has been actively involved in managing for this organizational transition.

2009 literary festival features diverse lineup of authors and playwrights
OLLU’s Annual Literary Festival, titled “LIT: The Fire Inside Us,” takes place March 30-April 5, 2009.
“We chose this year’s theme as a way to encourage our participants to discover how the May 6 fire that devastated our Main Building last year helped us all to come together as a community,” said Nan Cuba, OLLU assistant professor of English and festival coordinator. “The fire outside lit the fire inside of us.”
Events during the festival, include:
- On the evening of April 1, festival headliner Janet Burroway will read from her collections. Burroway is the author of eight novels, plays, poetry, essays, texts for dance and children’s books. On April 2, Burroway will lecture on metaphor and symbol.
- Other festival headliner Stephanie Elizondo Griest will meet with Mujeres Writing Group on April 2, as well as participate in High School Day on April 3. The third annual day for high schoolers will feature literary presentations and an opportunity for students to tour the campus and receive admissions information. Kicking off the day will be “The Line in the Sand: Stories from the U.S. Mexico Border,” presented by OLLU’s Campus Ministry and José Rúben De León. This dramatic reading about Mexican immigrants crossing the border is part of Catholic Relief Services’ drama project.
- Two plays will conclude this year’s festival: “House on Mango Street,” adaptation by Amy Ludwig and “Fool for Love” by Sam Shepard .
House on Mango Street, performed on April 4, is based on the well-known book by Sandra Cisneros. It is being directed by OLLU’s Gregory Hinojosa and produced by Gypsy Pantoja and Victor Treviño. General admission is $10; seniors/military, $8; students (non-OLLU), $5; free for OLLU students with identification. Children younger than 12, free. Read a review of the play.
From April 2-4, the 24th Street Players will present the Shepard play by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. The play stars OLLU senior drama majors, Juan Calderón, Michael Garcia, Shannon O’Dowd and Jessica N. Ramirez. Director is Pantoja and producer is Treviño. It has strong language and some violence, and children younger than 16 years old will not be admitted. General admission is $8; seniors/military, $6; non-OLLU students, $5; free for OLLU students with identification.
The 2009 Literary Festival is funded in part by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the OLLU Strategic Grant Initiative. Janet Burroway’s appearance has been made possible in part with funding from The Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts. Events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
