students for both acceptance into graduate school and
entry into the helping professions. Students obtain
the education and knowledge required for entry into
other fields as well. Students who graduate with a BA
in Psychology may find employment opportunities in a
variety of settings, which may include: human services,
mental health, nursing homes, administration, community
relations, program development, human resources, public
relations, market research, teaching, retail, sales
and advocacy. Click on this careers

Students
have the option of selecting concentration in pre-counseling
or research.
-
The
pre-counseling concentration prepares students for
entry level positions or graduate training in mental
health and human service fields through the learning
of basic counseling theories and techniques and
application of these techniques in an experiential
practicum.
-
The
research concentration prepares students for graduate
training or entry level positions in psychological
science through the practice of research methodology
in conducting an original research project.
Students
may opt to complete both concentrations.
In
addition to the BA in psychology, the department offers
two certificates that students may earn in the areas
of Gerontology and Violence Intervention and Prevention.
Undergraduate psychology majors with conversational
proficiency in Spanish may choose the biliterate degree
option.
The
undergraduate program provides opportunities to conduct
psychological research with faculty. Qualified students
may opt to participate in the McNair Scholars Program.
Undergraduate
students also have the opportunity to become involved
in one or both of the department’s official clubs:
The Psychology Club and Psi Chi, the National Honor
Society for Psychology majors and minors. The Psychology
Club is an organization of mainly psychology majors
and minors, but membership is open to all students with
an interest in psychology. The club is both an academic
and social organization. Members of this very active
organization sponsor guest speakers, hold fundraisers,
have social activities, conduct service projects, and
attend psychology conferences. Psi Chi membership criteria
include a 3.18 GPA overall and a 3.00 GPA in all psychology
courses, with at least nine hours of psychology courses.
Members of Psi Chi are also members of the Psychology
Club, and the clubs meet jointly twice a month. Times
and dates are arranged at the beginning of each semester.
