Communicative
and Cultural Competency for Mental Health Providers
(CCC-MHP)
The
purpose of the CCC-MHP training program to improve the
language and cultural proficiencies of mental health
providers who serve Spanish-speaking clients and their
families.

Summer 2006 Training Programs
The
CCC-MHP Summer Institute provides intensive training
to enhance the professional Spanish language proficiency
of mental health providers who are conversationally
fluent in Spanish. The goal of this training is to produce
professionals who are as confident and competent providing
services in Spanish as they are in English. The Summer
Institute provides training in following areas:
Spanish vocabulary and grammar, including oral and written
communication;
Cultural variables and issues involved in working with
Spanish-speaking clients;
Application of theory and interventions with Spanish-speaking
clients.
Licensed
mental health providers and doctoral students with at
least two semesters of supervised
practica are invited to apply for the training. Applicants
must have strong Spanish language conversational skills
and some experience in providing Spanish language services.
Formal assessment of Spanish oral proficiency will be
conducted through the American Council on the Teaching
of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) prior to acceptance into
the program.
Training
dates for the CCC-MHP 2005 Summer Institute are Sunday,
June 4 – Friday, June 23, 2005 . Participants should
arrive at the Our Lady of the Lake University campus
in time for orientation on Sunday, June 4. Classes will
be scheduled Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00 ,
Assessment of Bilingual and Spanish-Dominant
Clients
The
Assessment of Bilingual and Spanish-Dominant Clients
Workshop will consist of 20 hours of training over five
days.
Applicants
who are practicing mental health professionals and have
completed graduate-level training in assessment are
invited to apply for this workshop. This workshop requires
advanced language skills. Participants in the 2005 Summer
Institute and professionals, who have completed previous
CCC-MHP training programs, are eligible to participate.
All others will be required to take a Spanish oral proficiency
examination to formally assess language skills prior
to acceptance into the program. This will be conducted
through the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign
Languages (ACTFL) at no cost to the applicants.

Workshop is scheduled Monday, June 26 – Friday,
June 30, 2005 , with
four hours of training per day.
Supervisors/Trainers
Critical Skills Workshop
The
Supervisors/Trainers Critical Skills Workshop will provide
participants an opportunity to discuss common challenges
in supervision and training of therapists working with
Spanish-speaking clients and to develop practical strategies
and methods to facilitate the learning and skills of
their supervisees.
The
Supervisors/Trainers Critical Skills Workshop is scheduled
Monday, June 26 – Friday,
June 30, 2005 , with
four hours of training per day.
COST
The
2006 CCC-MHP programs are supported by a Workforce Training
Grant from the Center for Mental Health Service of the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA), so there is no cost for the training.
