Sociology Program

Many people who enter our Sociology degree programs share the desire to help shape groups, organizations, communities and social institutions for the benefit of society as a whole. Our programs, including a bachelor of arts (BA) degree and master of arts (MA) degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Sociological Practice, will prepare you for a vast number of careers in areas ranging from public relations to health services. You will learn social theory, gain experience with research methodology and professional writing, and become familiar with scholarly literature related to sociology subjects. The objective of this program is to prepare students to evaluate conditions and programs, solve problems, and help bring about constructive change by using professional knowledge and skills. Empowered by your degree, you will be ready to make an educated, ethical and positive contribution to the community.

Criminal Justice Program

The Criminal Justice major provides students with a practical but academically challenging education that will permit them to acquire critical thinking, analytical, and technical skills necessary to achieve success in the workplace. The program enables students to pursue diverse career paths, including higher education, institutional and community corrections, investigation, law enforcement, loss prevention in business, and work with non-profit or for-profit organizations that serve specialized populations, such as re-entering offenders or at-risk children. As a criminal justice major, you will learn about the nature and extent of crime in society and explore theories of why crime occurs. You will also acquire basic knowledge of the operation of the Criminal Justice system, including its historical background, theoretical underpinnings, legal aspects and implications, contemporary social factors, ethical issues, and principles and processes of the various parts of the system. The curriculum provides you with an opportunity for personal growth and development of leadership skills that will enhance your life opportunities and your work as you embark on a career in criminal justice or in a related area of service to the community.
